Why Roundabouts

Roundabouts: the unique alternative in urban design.

Many communities are beginning to recognize the positive effect of properly designed roundabout intersections. Along with adding safety, the modern roundabout can provide numerous additional advantages over conventional intersections:

  • Reduced vehicle speeds
  • Access for bicyclists and pedestrians
  • Reduced fuel and/or energy consumption
  • Lowered vehicle emissions
  • Unique opportunities for landscaping and other aesthetic treatments
  • Added locations for entry or “gateway” features

Plus, roundabouts can be less expensive to operate. In addition to the community benefits, municipalities can end up benefiting from lower maintenance costs. Roundabouts eliminate maintenance costs associated with traffic signals that can amount to $3,500 per year per intersection. Additionally, electricity costs can be reduced by as much as $1,500 per year per intersection.
